The supplementary feeding programme targets food-insecure households and helps children in need to have a nutritional meal. As a result of the prevailing droughts in Zimbabwe, and economic challenges, children in Matabeleland are faced with hunger and malnutrition. Sethule Orphans’ Trust provides survival food baskets for vulnerable children who come from child-headed families, for those who are living with disability, for the elderly and for those with chronic diseases and no source of income. The programme makes efforts to curb the effects of food insecurity and provide a nutritional meal a day. Access to nutritious food helps improve children’s health, boosting their energy levels, their cognitive abilities and overall resilience. One basket contains basic food commodities, such as 2 litres of cooking oil and 20 kilos of maize meal, sugar, salt, soya mince, sugar beans and a bar of soap.
