  • 1
REACT is an acronym standing for Reject, Expose All Child Trauma. With the alarming rise of cases of child sexual abuse and the realisation that children are not forced but tricked into sexual acts, it has become crucial to equip children with the knowledge and tools to protect themselves. Recognising the urgency of this matter, Sethule Orphans’ Trust developed an innovative anti-child-abuse programme to empower children and educate them about their bodies and the importance of saying NO! The primary objective of the programme is to provide children with the essential knowledge and skills to safeguard themselves against sexual abuse, as well as knowledge about the reporting channels in the event of abuse. It also educates children about what constitutes child sexual abuse, enabling them to recognise inappropriate behaviour and understand when their boundaries are being violated.

Overview

REACT (Reject & Expose All Child Trauma) is an anti-sexual-abuse programme. It’s developed for junior school learners between eight and 12 years old. It serves to enlighten children on sexual abuse and equip them with knowledge of how to prevent it. We are working with ten schools in two districts where Sethule operates.

We educate the children on how to adopt good relationships with the opposite sex and with adults.Children are taught about body parts, right and wrong touches, body safety rights, avoiding undeserved gifts and bribes, how to say ‘No’, and to tell someone if they suspect abuse or if abuse has happened. The use of pictures and videos keeps the group alert, and sweets are given as a reward to those who actively participate.

Children are then encouraged to tell the relevant people, i.e. school counsellors, parents/guardians, police or anyone they trust. The victims go through counselling and are involved in programmes that boost their confidence and self-esteem.
